MURIWAI BEACH GANNET COLONY
It’s close to Auckland and only one of three locations around New Zealand where a gannet colony can be viewed. At Muriwai the gannets settle on Otakamiro Point and the rocky pillar that rises beside it, as well as on an island further offshore.

- Gannets have wingspans up to two metres across
- Gannets migrate to Australia and back
- The rocks of Muriwai also belong to fur seals and terns
- Cliffs appreciated by rock fanciers
- Beaches manned by lifeguards on busy days
- Various walks offered through Muriwai Regional Park
The best time to visit is between September and March. It is an easy 40 minute drive from central Auckland on the North-Western motorway and follow signs. Two viewing platforms provide great vantage points looking over the colony and the wild rugged west coastline and unique black iron-sands.
Locally owned & operated ‘Coast to Coast Tours‘ runs tours of the area, (including their sheep farm & historic Homestead).
