RANGITOTO ISLAND

Rangitoto dominates Auckland’s seascape and a visit there is like stepping into another world. The island is a public reserve managed by the Department of Conservation and is famed worldwide as a botanical gem.

VISIT KAWAU ISLAND

As one of the largest islands near Auckland, it is advertised as a jewel in the Hauraki Gulf resulting in it being a popular destination for pleasure craft and base for many holiday dwellings.

Access to the island is by boat or ferry. Water taxis travel daily from Sandspit near Warkworth (about 90 minutes north of Auckland). Kawau Island does not have scheduled passenger air service.

MURIWAI BEACH GANNET COLONY

It’s close to Auckland and only one of three locations around New Zealand where a gannet colony can be viewed. At Muriwai the gannets settle on Otakamiro Point and the rocky pillar that rises beside it, as well as on an island further offshore.

• Gannets have wingspans up to two metres across
• Gannets migrate to Australia and back
• The rocks of Muriwai also belong to fur seals and terns
• Cliffs appreciated by rock fanciers
• Beaches manned by lifeguards on busy days
• Various walks offered through Muriwai Regional Park

The best time to visit is between September and March. It is an easy 40 minute drive from central Auckland on the North-Western motorway and follow signs. Two viewing platforms provide great vantage points looking over the colony and the wild rugged west coastline and unique black iron-sands.

GOAT ISLAND MARINE RESERVE
