MURIWAI BEACH GANNET COLONY

(0) Comment

It’s close to Auckland and only one of three locations around New Zealand where a gannet colony can be viewed. At Muriwai the gannets settle on Otakamiro Point and the rocky pillar that rises beside it, as well as on an island further offshore.

auckland sightseing tours MuriwaiBeachGannetColony4 300x225 MURIWAI BEACH GANNET COLONY

  • Gannets have wingspans up to two metres across
  • Gannets migrate to Australia and back
  • The rocks of Muriwai also belong to fur seals and terns
  • Cliffs appreciated by rock fanciers
  • Beaches manned by lifeguards on busy days
  • Various walks offered through Muriwai Regional Park

The best time to visit is between September and March. It is an easy 40 minute drive from central Auckland on the North-Western motorway and follow signs. Two viewing platforms provide great vantage points looking over the colony and the wild rugged west coastline and unique black iron-sands.

Locally owned & operated ‘Coast to Coast Tours‘ runs tours of the area, (including their sheep farm & historic Homestead).

ANTARTIC ENCOUNTER & UNDERWATER WORLD

(1) Comment

Travel through this unique aquarium (housed in old stormwater holding tanks) on a conveyor belt within a transparent acrylic tunnel that protects you from sharks, stingrays and hundreds of other wonderful specimens of ocean life.

nature tours kelly tarltons antarctic 300x276 ANTARTIC ENCOUNTER & UNDERWATER WORLD

  • Explore the wilds of Antarctica without going there
  • Take a snowcat ride to a bustling penguin town especially at feed time
  • See a replica of Capt Scott’s 1911 Antarctic Hut
  • For extra excitement take a dive with the sharks

Sharks shock and scare us (remember Jaws!) but did you know that there is far greater risk being killed on the road, drowning at the beach, being killed by elephants, bees, crocodiles or lightning than being attacked or killed by a shark.
General admission ranges from NZ$15 to $29.90 with free admission for pre-schoolers or on your birthday
Family passes range from NZ$50.90 (1 adult + 2 children) to $83.90 (2 adults + 4 children)
